Teachers know that reading and fluency are critical parts of students’ learning. And yet, collecting and responding to fluency data is time consuming and can be overwhelming for even the most seasoned teachers.
Here is how some teachers of students grades 3rd - 6th use Readlee to give students a chance to grow AND track their own growth every single week.
Tuesday - "Cold Read" of a new text
Thursday - "Hot Read" of the Tuesday text
Friday - Groups with Free Read and Review
Monday - Free Read for 15 minutes. Give students a chance to read anything they want, without having to prep anything. The best part? You still get a recording and data to see how the practice went.
Teacher set up steps:
- Share these instructions with students for how to do a free read.
- Get yourself your favorite snack and a nap.
Student steps:
- Follow these instructions to start a Free Read.
- Read anything and track your progress.
Tuesday - Students do a “cold read” of a text they have never read before and mark their growth.
Teacher set up steps:
- Choose a text at your student’s level(s)
- Create a new assignment and copy & paste or upload the PDF of the text
- Add instructions and possibly a model reading to make sure students feel comfortable and confident in tackling their reading of a brand new text.
- Use this graph for students to mark down how long it takes them to read the text.
Student steps:
- Go to app.readlee.com and choose the assignment.
- Listen to the model reading and read the text aloud.
- Mark down the total time it took them to read the text.
Wednesday - Free Read for 15 minutes. Follow the same steps as Monday.
Thursday - Students do a “hot read” of the same text they read on Tuesday and answer comprehension questions. They will also mark down more data from their Tuesday reading to review on Friday.
Teacher set up steps:
- Duplicate the assignment you used on Tuesday.
- Add comprehension questions for students to complete after reading. The model reading should still be included to remind students what they are reading and give them another way to review the text while answering the comprehension questions.
Student steps:
- Go to app.readlee.com and choose “Turned In” in the upper right corner.
- Choose the assignment they completed on Tuesday.
- Add the words correct per minute, total words and unique words read to their graph for their Tuesday reading.
- Navigate back to their home screen.
- Choose “New” in the upper right corner and select the new assignment.
- Listen to the model reading and read the text aloud.
- Complete the comprehension questions.
- Mark down the total time it took to read the text.
Friday - 15 minute Free Read and data review in small groups.
Teacher set up steps:
- Review student data from the two assignments, marking on this spreadsheet. If you have Ultimate account access you can save this step for monthly or a school license holder, you download a CSV of the full school year’s data at anytime and can skip this step.
- With the tasks detail screen, review students’ answers to the comprehension questions to note trends and gaps in understanding.
- Create small groups based on the data from the reading or comprehension questions.
- While one small group is working with the teacher, others can be completing a free read or checking and marking their wcpm, total words and unique words read on their graph.
Student steps:
- When prompted, meet with their teacher to review their readings for the week, complete a free read or mark their wcpm, total words and unique words on their graph.
